Step-by-step guide to creating your own best man speech

I have found a site that says it provides written and inspirational wedding speeches -- including best man speeches -- as well showing you how to tailor your speech to your own special circumstances; it certainly has a whole raft of absolutely positive reviews. They offer complete peace of mind for any best man who is expected give a speech at a wedding but who is absolutely dreading it!

Have a look here and let me know what you think:

Best Man Jokes - What Is Appropriate?

You've been asked by your long-time mate to be the best man at his wedding. At first you felt proud to be asked, but now you've realised that it means you are going to have to give the best man's speech at the wedding reception -- and that scares you to pieces. The speech is supposed to be funny, right? But how can you pick the right best man jokes for the occasion without looking either crass or humorless?

Well, you are right: the best man speech is normally amusing, but it doesn't have to be eye-wateringly, rolling-in-the-aisles funny. And it doesn't even have to be funny all the way through -- in fact the best speeches aren't.

Here's what you need to do:

Understand your audience: Your audience want you to succeed, remember that; the applause at the end is partially because they enjoyed your speech, but partially because they are glad it's over without any major accidents. So don't give them anything to worry about: just remember that there are not just people of your age and disposition but normally there are also children and elderly; make sure your speech caters for everyone.

Structure: The best structure for a best man speech is one or two jokes to open, a light-hearted body with perhaps one or two jokes, and a heart-warming ending. You need to leave your audience smiling but feeling a little teary-eyed, and usually all you have to do is say something nice about the bride and groom just before you make the toast at the end of your speech.

Best Man Jokes: Aim to make the audience smile, chuckle, or guffaw with your jokes, not cringe with embarrassment. Avoid adult material and religious, racial, or political humor (children and elderly won't like or understand it, and others will feel embarrassed on their behalf too), and don't make your jokes long and rambling: one-, two-, and three-liners are best here.

Anecdotes: Find a handful of incidents from the groom's past that the audience will find amusing -- two or three will be enough. You have to find some way of showing why the incidents are relevant: a story of how the groom broke his leg slipping on ice in the street late at night and struggling to get to hospital is not relevant unless he slipped because he was trying to get back home to his fiance, for example.

Preparation: Sketch out what you want to say on a piece of paper or a small number of cards, and practise. Your speech should be a maximum of eight or nine minutes, but longer than three -- you want to interest your audinece, but not bore them.

Delivery: When the time comes, stand up straight with your legs slightly apart -- that way you can relax during your speech. Take a deep breath then breathe it out, then start. Speak slowly and deliberately, smile, and achieve eye contact with the bride and groom and look out over all the other guests; do not spend the entire speech looking down at your notes. Take pauses, especially if the audience is laughing -- smile back at them, and wait for them to finish completely before you continue.

Again, you do not have to be the perfect public speaker, just good enough for the guests to mentally tick the box that says "Best Man's Speech: done". Remember that the day is all about the married couple, not about the best man's speech.

If you follow these guidelines your best man speech will be enjoyed by all -- including you!
